Fuel song lyrics by Metallica from ReLoad
Fuel was a single from Metallica's ReLoad album. You could call it their 'boy racer' song.....
"Fuel" opens the ReLoad album.
It's lyrics reflect the thrill of fast driving and street racing. The song could also be applied to the fact that people like to drive their lives (like their cars) too fast.
It is one of James Hetfield's favourite songs as he later said before a concert played at an Oakland Raiders game,"We have to play Fuel...'cause it gets me pumped up." (taped on Some Kind of Monster).
Fuel lyrics
Gimme Fuel,
Gimme Fire,
Gimme that which I desire,
Ooh!
Turn on...I see red
Adrenaline crash & crash my head
Nitro Junkie, Paint me dead
And I see red
One hundred plus through Black and White
War Horse, Warhead
Fuck 'Em Man, white knuckles tight
Through Black & White
Ohhh, On I Burn,
Fuel is pumping engines,
Burning hard, loose & clean
And I burn,
Churning my direction,
Quench my thirst with Gasoline
So Gimme Fuel,
Gimme Fire,
Gimme that which I desire,
Hey
Turn on beyond the bone
Swallow future, spit out home
Burn your face upon the crome
Yeah!
Take the corner, join the crash,
Headlights, Headlines
Another Junkie lives too fast
Yeah lives way too fast, fast, fast, oohh-aye
Ohhh, On I Burn
Fuel is pumping engines
Burning hard, loose & clean
And On I burn
Churning my direction,
Quench my thirst with Gasoline
So Gimme Fuel
Gimme Fire
Gimme that which I desire
Yeah-Heah
White Knuckle Tight!
[solo]
Gimmie Fuel.... On I burn, on and on
Gimmie Fire.... On I burn, on and on
My Desire....
Ohhh, On I Burn
Fuel is pumping engines
Burning hard, loose & clean
And I burn
Churning my direction
Quench my thirst with Gasoline
Gimme Fuel
Gimme Fire
Gimme that which I desire
Ooh
On I Burn!

Another interpretation of this song's lyrics, is that they reflect the external struggles of the band members themselves as well as the personal lyric style James Hetfield adopted beginning with The Black Album - that is to say one could suggest that the song is about addiction.
Specifically, the addiction may be Hetfield's alcoholism, but it could be a reference to any sort of addiction.
It is a reference to whatever it may be that fuels a person. Further, it may reflect Hetfield's decision to substitute his love of cars and racing for his love of alcohol.
